The Secret to Performance Isn’t Motivation, It’s Consistency:

Early in my career for about five years, I ran two self-storage sites with a small team of five.

We were geographically cut off from the rest of the district, which meant we got tossed around constantly, new District Manager after new District Manager.

Sometimes one or two a year.

And every DM brought a “new way”:
New revenue focus
New reporting process
New priorities
New insurance push of the month
New “this is how we do it now” energy

At first, I felt it too. My team felt it even more.

Every change created anxiety. People started operating like the ground could shift at any moment, because it did.

Then I realized something that changed my leadership forever:
No matter who the DM was… the base job never changed.

So I started coaching my team on the basic 90% that never changes:
Call the leads
Keep the property clean and safe
Go to the bank
Collect rent
Run auctions correctly
Be available for customers

And something interesting happened.

My team stopped panicking every time leadership changed.

They stopped “waiting to see what the new DM wants.”
They just executed.

We became the steady team in whatever district we landed in, the group that didn’t wobble when the organization did.

That mindset shift led to my two sites outperforming the rest of the state for three years straight.

Because here’s the truth:
People can’t perform at a high level when they feel like everything is changing constantly.

I didn’t hype anyone up.
I didn’t run motivational meetings.
I didn’t reinvent the wheel.

I just built stability through consistency, and protected momentum during chaos.

That was the first year I won Manager of the Year.

It wasn’t the last.

Consistency is still the greatest driver of performance I’ve ever seen.
